Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University or BMIU, Lucknow is one of-its-kind Music University. BMIU exists under University Grant Commission Act 1956 in 2000 as a deemed university. It is an esteemed study centre of Indian traditional music and is registered under the registration of Societies Act 1860 as an autonomous institution. The history of music education in India dates back to ancient period when all education was imparted in Gurukulas and Ashrams of great Saints and Rishi-Munis. The system of modern institutionalization of education in graded, time bound structure was ushered in by the British rulers from the mid-nineteenth century.
